FAQ

  • Our shop address is:

    Shop & donation hours are Wednesday – Friday, 10am – 5pm.

    Stop in and see us!

  • We gratefully accept:

    • Bicycles of any quality and in any condition — unless heavily rusted

    • Frames, parts (wheels, handlebars, forks, cranks, etc.)

    • Presentable, functional accessories, including:

      • Lights

      • Locks (with keys)

      • Car racks (with all parts/keys)

      • Bags or panniers

    We CANNOT accept:

    • Heavily rusted bikes

    • Used helmets or water bottles

    • Exposed/unboxed inner tubes

    • Used chains or brake pads

    • Worn cassettes or clothes

    If you are planning to bring a large donation of 10 or more bicycles at once, please give us a call ahead of time so our crew can be ready to receive you!

  • We do not purchase bicycles or components from individuals.

    2nd Cycle is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and our entire service model relies on generous community donations to fuel our youth programs, mechanical classes, and community bike shop.

     

    Alternative options: if you’re looking to sell your bike, we highly recommend local digital platforms like Facebook Marketplace, Pinkbike, or Offerup.

  • Due to the high volume of donations and limited staff capacity, we may be able to pick up donations after payment of a $250 fee, to cover time and fuel costs. Please send pickup inquiries to lincoln@2ndcycle.org.

  • E-bike donations are subject to strict safety rules.​

    Battery access required:

    Lithium-ion battery safety is a major priority for our facility. We strictly require that any donated E-bike has a functional battery that can be safely and easily removed (keys must be provided).

    Approved systems only:

    We only accept E-bikes utilizing a Bosch Motor System.

    We CANNOT accept:

    • Rad Power Bikes

    • Broken E-bikes​

    How to handle a broken E-bike:

    Our shop does not have the technical capacity or space to safely store, repair, or process damaged lithium-ion systems. If your E-bike is broken, please drop the battery off at your nearest hazardous waste facility or certified battery recycler, and take the frame to a local metal recycling center.

    Mandatory pre-approval:

    Please contact lincoln@2ndcycle.org to get explicit approval before bringing any e-bike to the shop, as our staff retains the right to refuse any E-bike donation at the door.

  • That depends! Donated bikes may be used as teaching tools in our youth or adult programs and then donated through a partner organization to someone in need of a bike. Bikes may be made available for the youth in our Earn-A-Bike program to earn. And bikes may be refurbished by staff or volunteers and sold in our community bike shop, with the sales revenue generated in this way funding our programming.

     

    We also support other programs by passing along your donations, including Bikes for Kids and a program that provides bikes to organizations in several parts of Africa—we send them an average of 500+ bikes each year!

  • Yes, your donation is tax-deductible! You can instantly request a digital donation receipt by filling out our online form right after dropping off your gear.

    A donation receipt will immediately be emailed to all donors using our online Network For Good portal.

    Second Cycle is a registered 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit organization. Our federal tax identification number (EIN) is 45-2637950.

  • You can donate in-person at our shop (1205 MLK Jr. Way, Tacoma, WA 98405) with cash, check, or credit card—and enjoy our services while you’re there! Or mail a check payable to Second Cycle.

  • Of course! When you donate through our online form, you can choose monthly, quarterly, or yearly recurring donations.
